Empty-nester Jackie embraced a new and unexpected journey that launched “Mama Bear’s Brew,” a successful microbrew out of Boulder.
Jackie needed a new purpose after her kids had grown and left home. By chance she mixed beer with iced tea on a warm night at a café in Brazil, and liked what she tasted. Back home in Colorado she hunkered down in her kitchen and perfected her concoction, then launched “Mama Bear’s Brew” with the help of her brother.
The demands of a small business were greater and more challenging than she imagined, yet so was the fulfillment of creating a unique product that appealed so widely to her neighbors it won the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 Boulder Winter Craft Beer Festival.
Most small business owners wear a lot of hats and Jackie is no exception. From keeping the books to visiting suppliers, checking in with customers and even pitching in on warehouse and delivery duties, she puts in a lot of hours, many of them on her feet.
“Running a small microbrew business means spending a lot of time on the go, pivoting quickly from one task to another. Through it all I’ve worn Dansko footwear for its great blend of comfort, support and style.
I know about Dansko’s popularity in the medical field because my daughter is a pediatrician. I think if your environment is fast-paced and requires a lot of time on your feet, Dansko is your only choice.
I never imagined being in the microbrew business, though now I can’t imagine doing anything else. It’s challenging, demanding and sometimes tiring, but also fulfilling and rewarding. I’m proud of starting it from nothing with my brother, and I love that it’s become a favorite drink of so many people around Boulder and beyond.
